TI introduces industry's smaller buck-boost battery charger integrated circuit

Texas Instruments (TI) today introduced the industry's smaller buck-boost battery charger integrated circuit, which integrates power path management to achieve greater power density, universal and fast charging, and a charging efficiency of up to 97%. The BQ25790 and BQ25792 support USB Type-C™ and USB Power Delivery (PD) ports in small personal electronic products, portable medical equipment, and building automation applications for efficient charging, and can reduce static standby current by 10 times.

Provide fast charging in wired, wireless or mobile adapters

The BQ25790 and BQ25792 provide the flexibility of charging from one battery to four batteries, and are compatible with USB Type-C and USB PD input standards. The charging current can reach 5 A over the entire input voltage range (3.6 V to 24 V). The charger's integrated dual input selector supports multiple types of power supplies including wireless, USB, cylindrical jack and solar charging, while providing fast charging-up to 97% efficiency at 30 W.

Universal charging enables portable medical devices, such as sphygmomanometers and low-power continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, to be recharged via car adapters or USB-PD adapters, bringing greater flexibility and Convenience. Mobile (OTG) charging can be supported by the forward and reverse bidirectional operation of the charging IC. For more information, please read the article "Universal fast charging is the future trend of battery charging applications."

Design smaller, higher power applications, increase power density by 50%

The charger can provide a power density of 155 mW/mm2 (100 W/in2), which is about twice that of the market. The new buck-boost charger can help engineers reduce the solution size and bill of materials (BOM). It is TI's first device that fully integrates the following components: switching metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET), charging path Manage FET, input current and charge current detection circuit and dual input selection driver. The reduction in the number of components is valuable for applications such as smart speakers; moreover, as the market adoption rate increases, the size and cost of these applications continue to shrink.

Extend battery run time by lower power consumption

The BQ25790 and BQ25792 are TI's first multi-cell buck-boost battery chargers with a quiescent current of less than 1 µA. The quiescent current is reduced by up to ten times through the transportation mode and shutdown function, and the battery standby time provided is at least five times higher than the market. Combined with the extremely low 8mΩ battery FET resistance, engineers can further extend battery runtime.

For example, when the main power supply is switched to the battery pack, the video doorbell that normally depends on the AC power supply can be guaranteed to operate normally. TI's charger helps reduce power consumption through heat dissipation, thereby making the battery life of the video doorbell longer.

Packaging and availability

The BQ25790 is available in a 2.9mm x 3.3mm, 56-pin WCSP package and can now be purchased from TI and its authorized distributors. The BQ25792 is available in a 4mm x 4mm, 29-pin QFN package and can now be purchased from TI and authorized distributors. Complete reels and customized reels are available on TI.com and through other channels, starting at 1,000 pieces. The BQ25790EVM evaluation module can be purchased on TI.com. TI.com supports multiple payment and shipping options.
